Epilepsy is an episodic disorder resulting from temporary brain dysfunction which produces convulsive or non-convulsive seizures. It is estimated that more than 50 million people throughout the world have epilepsy. It affects all ages, races and social classes. Epilepsy can be treated. The vast majority of people with epilepsy can have their seizures controlled by taking anti-epileptic drugs. Although the advances in medical treatment have brought the opportunity for a normal life to a substantial majority of those who have epilepsy, social factors complicate this process and frequently limit the person with epilepsy from participating fully in society. This varies from country to country, because of the diverse degrees of prevailing prejudices, lack of understanding and cultural backgrounds. It is the commitment of the national epilepsy associations to change and improve this situation. The International Bureau for Epilepsy offers support to reach this goal.
