IE News: Issue 3 – 2016

Are you wondering why a chicken or, more precisely, a rooster has pride of place on the front cover.? Let me explain. We all know that the rooster is one of the best 'wake up calls' around and, as we race towards the New Year, this issue of the IBE magazine shows that there is much to wake up to. Just as we ring in 2017, we will know the identity of the next IBE President, Secretary General and Treasurer, with the other rounds of elections following soon after. By the end of January, we will know which Letters of Intent will have been chosen to be supported by the next round of Promising Strategies funding. In early February we will celebrate International Epilepsy Day and we hope that even more chapters will celebrate the day in 2017. Already the art competition is proving popular and we have some cute new videos using our mascot, Campi the seahorse, to promote it. Catch him and his friends on Facebook and Twitter! Approval of the Strategic Plan 2016-2019 is nearing completion, and will provide the roadmap for IBE's future direction. In closing, I would like to mention another reason for choosing a rooster [...]

IE News: Issue 4 – 2015

On 12 October, IBE received the news that Hanneke de Boer, one of IBE's longest serving advocates had died. Although many of us knew that she was unwell and not expected to recover, the news was still hard to believe. In this issue we include an obituary for Hanneke. For almost 30 years, she devoted her life to IBE, during which time she met countless people in every region of the world, each one of whom she touched with her energy, her drive and her determination to get things done. We have also tried to include as many photos of Hanneke's time with IBE and we hope that you will enjoy them and remember her with a smile. We also say goodbye to another supporter of the Bureau, Christoph Pachlatko, who died suddenly later in October. But life moves on, and the magazine also brings news of new initiatives. IE News- Issue 4 – 2015 There is the Photo Competition as part of International Epilepsy Day celebrations; a report on the EU funded ESBACE project; and reports from meetings in Italy and Ghana. Held back until next time, due to pressure of space, is the next instalment of the history of [...]

IE News: Issue 2 – 2015

In this issue ... This issue of the magazine is a clear indication of how busy it has been in the last few months. More significantly, it also shows some very positive advances in the work of IBE to meet its goals. In the last magazine, we reported on the approval of the WHO Resolution on the Global Burden of Epilepsy at the WHO Executive Board meeting in early February. Now, three months later, it is great to be able to report that the resolution had its final approval at the World Health Assembly at the end of May. When you read the report you will see the tremendous level of support that the document obtained from Member States. IE News: Issue 2 – 2015 For more than four years, the Governance Task Force has been reviewing the IBE Constitution and drafted changes are now ready for approval by the General Assembly. A draft, showing the proposed changes and explaining the reason why these are being proposed, has been circulated to members. The report on page 6 explains the process. A small task force, mandated by the President, has been busy preparing a draft strategy document to be presented at the [...]

First up was approval by the WHO Executive Board of a resolution on epilepsy on Monday 2nd February. This was a landmark day and you can read all about the resolution, the procedures involved in its approval, as well as what happens next, in this issue. Exactly one week later, on Monday 9th February, we celebrated the first International Epilepsy Day. There is always trepidation when a new initiative is introduced but there was no need to fear - the event was embraced by IBE and ILAE members, by people with an interest in epilepsy, and by all those willing to support the cause.  Social media was buzzing and by Tuesday 10th February we found that the hashtag #epilepsyday had appeared on more than 22 million devices and was 'trending' in Ireland! Our cover shows one brave man in Spain who took our [...]
